Demurrage

The fee assessed by the carrier in the event that the customer exceeds the pre-agreed/ defined free time for loading and unloading of cargo in accordance with the conditions of the agreement. Demurrage is the term that is used in the rail and ocean industries.

In port tariff, demurrage refers to the charge which should be paid to the port for storage of cargo, once the given free clear period is exceeded.
