There are different types of vessels available in the world’s merchant shipping fleet. Each type of vessel has a specially designed purpose. RORO ships are designed to transport wheeled cargo via sea.

Here we will look for the 10 largest RORO ships available in the shipping fleet.

1. ECO LIVORNO

ECO LIVORNO is operated by Grimaldi Group. She is sailing under the flag of Italy. ECO LIVORNO runs with a  hybrid powertrain aiming to contribute towards a sustainable shipping industry. She was built by Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China in 2021.  It is equipped with lithium batteries for zero emission.

ECO LIVORNO is a 238 m LOA vessel with 34 m breadth with 67,311 GRT.  She has 7 decks and can carry 7,800 linear meters of freight, equal to 500 trailers and 180 cars.

ECO LIVORNO  is the 3rd ship of Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) class. ECO VALENCIA is the 1st hybrid ship of GG5G kind and the Grimaldi Group has ordered 12 of them. Previously delivered sister ships of  ECO LIVORNO have linear meters of freight equal to 500 trailers.

While at berth GG5G ships can cut down the emission to zero using the electricity stored in 5 MWh mega-size lithium batteries. And she is one of the most eco-friendly ships in the world.

2. EPHESUS SEAWAYS

EPHESUS SEAWAYS  sails under the flag of  Turkey and built-in 2019. DFDS has ordered 06 vessels of this kind. They are the 1st series of ships of DFDS to adhere to IMO-sustainable energy guidelines.

She was built at Jinling Shipyard, China. She was named GOTHIA SEAWAYS by DFDS and later changed the name to EPHESUS SEAWAYS  after UN Ro-Ro Isletmeleri AS  took over the ship. She has 5 decks. And 6,700  meters of lane equivalent to 450 trailers. The unique design of the ship is equipped with a triple ramp at the stern. This facilitates fast loading and discharging operation.

EPHESUS SEAWAYS is a 237.4 M LOA vessel with a breadth of 33 m.  She is a 60,400 GRT ship and has a load capacity of 17,000 T.

3. CELINE

MV Celine is owned by Luxembourg-based CLdN. She has a capacity of 8,000 lane meters. And built-in South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Shipyard in 2017. Celine sail under the flag of Malta. Her sister ship MV Delphine has joined the world RORO fleet in 2018. LOA of the ship counts as 235 m and the breadth is 35 m. She has a loading capacity of 27,600 T. Her maximum speed is 20 Knots and the GRT is 74,000 T.

Her current passage covers ports of Zeebrugge, Rotterdam, London, Killingholme, Dublin, Gothenburg, Esbjerg, Hirtshals, Santander, Porto, Flushing and Dagenham as a short sea RORO ferry.

4. HOEGH TRIGGER.

Hoegh Trigger operates under Hoegh Autoliners, a Norwegian RORO line. It was manufactured by  Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry in 2015 in their shipyard in China. She has an 8,500 car carrying capacity equivalent to a load capacity of 22,000 T. Hoegh Tigger sail under the Norwegian flag. She has 14 decks and 5 hoistable decks.

The ship is 199.9 m, LOA, and 36 m in width.  The 15,700 horse-powered engine can speed up to 19 knots.

MV Titus is operated under Wallenius Wilhelmsen. And it is the 1st vessel of its kind built under the HERO vessels series of Wilhelmsen. She was built at the CSIC Xingang shipyard in China in 2018. She has a capacity of 8,000 CEU (Car Equivalent Units). Titus is equipped with 13 electrically hoistable deck panels in the cargo hold. Also, she has 5 adjustable decks. The HERO series of vessels was designed aiming to achieve the IMO 2030, emission reduction goal. Tannhauser reduces the CO2 emissions by 35% per tonne/km. HERO stands for High Efficiency RORO.

HERO series has 5 RORO ships with 8,000 car carrying capacity. These 5 ships are Thalatta, Theben, Themis, Thermopylae, Nabucco, and Traviata.

MV Titus is a 200 m LOA ship with a 37 m width. Her maximum speed is over 20 knots.

6. CENTURY HIGHWAY GREEN

CENTURY HIGHWAY GREEN  belongs to RORO line Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd commonly known as K Line. She is sailing under the Japanese flag and was manufactured by Tadotsu Shipyard in Japan which belongs to Imabari Shipbuilding Group in 2021. CENTURY HIGHWAY GREEN  is LNG powered vessel with a 199.98 m LOA and with a beam of 37.2 m. She has a load capacity of 16,700 T equivalent to 7,080 CEU (Car Equivalent Units).

CENTURY HIGHWAY GREEN is a next generation vessel design equipped with digital technology and equipment for safe, environmentally-friendly, and high quality service. NK class ship has a cruise speed of 18 Knots. Her engine is 12,500 horse powered has a fuel capacity of 2,439 cubic meters.

7. SIEM CONFUCIOUS

SIEM Confucius is another effort made towards green shipping. She is registered under the Liberian flag and owned by SIEM Car Carriers AS. Both SIEM Confucius and her sister ship Siem Aristotle solely runs on Liquid Natural Gas.  She was manufactured by Xiamen Shipbuilding   Industry in its China shipyard in 2020. SIEM Confucius is a 199.9 m LOA PCTC (Pure Car Carrier) with a 38 m beam. This RORO ship has a load capacity of 19,100 T equivalent to 7,500 vehicles.

Her gross tonnage is 72,900 and her deadweight is 19,151.

SIEM Car Carriers expect to reduce its total CO2 emissions by 30% by 2025 and to be CO2-neutral in its balance sheet by 2050.  SIEM Confucius was built as a result of the company’s CO2 goal. She has chartered to carry cargo on long-haul routes of the Volkswagen Group.

SIEM Confucius has a cruise speed of 16 knots.

8. GLOVIS STELLA

Glovis Stella was manufactured by Hyundai  Samho Heavy Industries in their South Korean shipyard in 2016. She is operated by Hyundai Glovis Co Ltd. and sails under the Marshall Islands flag.  She is owned by GL NV17 Shipping, INC. and has a cargo carrying capacity of 7,400 vehicles.

Her LOA is 200 m and has a beam of 35 m. Glovis Stella‘s load capacity is 19,600 T and weight is 65,700 T . With the 17,500 horse powered engine, she can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots.

Beluga Ace is operated under the leading shipping carrier Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Japan known as MOL. Beluga Ace is Panama registered ship built by Minaminippon Shipbuilding in Japan in 2018. She is equipped with augmented reality technologies and sensors to improve safety and operation capabilities.

Beluga Ace is 200 m long and the weidth/beam is 32 m. She is 63,100 T in weight and has a load capacity of 15,400 T.  Her engine capacity is 17,100 horsepower enabling a cruise speed of 21 Knots.

Morning crown  was built in 2005 by Stocznia Gdynia SA Gdynia Poland. She was built for Crown Maritime Limited in the Bahamas and sailing under the Bahamas flag. The 57,692 GRT, 21,052 DWT ship has a capacity to carry 6,658 cars. Morning crown is a 200 m long RORO ship with a beam of 32 m.

Morning crown is currently operating under Eukor, Japan.  Her engine is 21,200 horsepower and has a cruise speed of  16 knots.
