Unit Load Device (ULD) is specially made containers and pallets to transport cargo via air. All the Air freights, mails, and other luggage are stuffed in these containers and load them to the cargo belly of airplanes or to the air freighters.
International Air Transport Association (IATA) is responsible to design the ULD and implement rules and regulations related to them. These containers have a big say in the safety of the airplane while on air. So it is very crucial to have a better understanding of how to pack cargo into the ULD and to know the correct methods of handling them.
Unit Load Devices are useful as cargo can bundle and load into them. So the number of cargo handling reduces when loading and unloading to and from the aircraft.
Both unit load device containers and unit load device pallets are made with aluminum or a combination of aluminum and Lexan.
What is ULD number?
Same as the Intermodal containers, unit load devices have a ULD number to identify them. First, 3 letter prefix identifies the type of container 4 or 5 numbers after the prefix is a unique number to identify the specific container. The two-letter suffix is to identify the ULD owner.
What is ULD Management?
Same as in shipping, airplanes also should have a stowage plan on how to load the unit load devices to the airplane. Proper planning of the ULD loading plan is called ULD management. Airlines have ULD managers to carry out this job. It is their responsibility to make sure cargo belly space is fully utilized and cargo stuffed in the air freight containers and pallets effectively.
Air Cargo Container
Air cargo container is another name for the ULD or unit load device.
